Allow me to travel back a bit to the year 2018. It was late at night- half asleep and half awake; I swiped my Instagram feed using curiosity, and this post surfaced. It was no more than a meme, though still funny, and the caption set up faint echoes of a discussion I had with my friend a few hours earlier. Nothing had been searched, nothing had been tagged, nothing had been posted about it, nothing had been messaged- just a one to one conversation.

Creepy? You bet.

This was the first time I was experiencing the strange strength of AI in the realm of social media. Oh no, since then it has just been honed, cleverer, more evolved into a far more sophisticated thing. Nowadays, we need to comprehend the dangers of AI in social media beyond ads tracking conversations. It runs even deeper than that. The algorithms are very subtle but assist on what we see, think, believe and even vote.

This is why I am arguing to talk about this silent invasion.

The Algorithm That Knows You Better Than You Know Yourself

In the social media, it is all about the engagement. Yet the secret? The AI.

In other words, without getting too technical, AI examines likes, shares, and watch time as well as milliseconds spent hovering over a post. It creates a psychological map of what we are-or at least what it supposes us to be.

Before we realize it, the feed has turned into an echo chamber with what is in the posts being whatever we feel like seeing. It’s familiar, comforting. But that’s where the trouble begins. It is no longer your exploration it is catering to you.

And that’s where it gets interesting:

In AI’s orgy of curating your world, altering your perception is childishly easy. All of a sudden, you’re in a digital bubble where everything seems to corroborate your existing beliefs. The rule is the confirmation bias, the exception is the opposite.

Now think: Who benefits when we’re addicted, divided, and distracted?

Therefore, though naivete might argue otherwise, there is a possibility that the AI threats on social media might be planned infiltrations.

The more the involvement, the more the advertisement revenue. Outrage, fear or validation is the best stimulus to spark up engagement.

And that is what the AI has been designed to do, provide you with outrageously triggering content. Polarizing or utterly triggering: the more extreme the better. In this way, the system quietly doubles down on slanting people’s perceptions toward ideological extremes without their conscious awareness.

Take the example of 2016 elections in the U.S. Russian bots took to AI tools and approached Facebook, which acknowledged the fact that they interfered in the election. Similar patterns were found to be being used in elections conducted all over the world.

This isn’t conspiracy theory. This is a slow-motion train wreck.

Deepfakes: When You Can’t Trust Your Eyes

It is not just that AI curates the content, it makes it.

Deepfakes are videos that are made by using artificial intelligence to look like real persons. Funny, creative swaps of faces, impersonation of movies and scenes, impersonation of celebrities, etc. Everything fine at first.

But now? A video of a politician admitting a crime. Or merely a fake piece of news promoting violence.

The sharing is easy. And quite unreadable to reverse after going viral.

In a world where seeing isn’t believing anymore, who decides what reality is?

Data Privacy: The Illusion of Control

Most of us just scroll up and read privacy policy but in fact, AI does not need that much information to make conclusion about end-user.

It can predict income as well as health, sexual orientation, and political opinion based on a handful of likes. It is not a speculation; Europe geneticist has demonstrated that it is so through their experiments and Cambridge University and mit researchers.

Even worse? Your data is not just utilised in the selling of your shoes. Companies actually sell it to third parties, feed it into AI applications, and use it to predict (and manipulate) what you might do in the future.

So, when to say, “I have nothing to hide,” do remember this: it doesn’t mean hiding. It’s using.

Social Credit Scores: The Dark Future?

In China, the deployment of AI to moderate social media content for the purpose of operating the social credit system has already become a reality. Citizens receive scores for their online behavior. If your score is low, perhaps you’ll be unable to train for a train ticket or secure a loan.

Could it work somewhere else?

Your social media activity indicates risky behavior, and higher insurance premiums result. Employers might also check candidates’ profiles using AI analysis for ‘cultural fit’.

Far-fetched? Perhaps. But then again, maybe not.

Mental Health and the Endless Scroll

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you can spend hours on TikTok and Instagram and you literally lose the time?

By design, that is. AI is eager to study your sweet spot: a cocktail of the correct proportions with a dash of humorous and a conflict of emotion and controversy, and it will continue to feed you the juice forever.

Behind all the dopamine drip, there is a mental health crisis in the making. These consist of increased anxiety, depressions, fear of missing out and loneliness that occur because of excessive use of social media.

It’s been made like that.

When maximization of screen time is set as the sole objective of the AI, it conditioned its eyes off your well-being.

The Illusion of Free Will

This may be the scariest section.

We think we make choices — what to read, what to believe, what to buy. But when AI subtly shapes those choices, are they really ours?

If your feed is full of one-sided narratives, if the search results are molded to your past clicks, if ads are hyper-personalized… you’re not exploring freely. You’re being nudged. Gently. Persistently.

And over time, that nudging shapes who you will become.

So What Can You Do?

It is easy to get a feeling of powerlessness. First, it is the awareness.

Be on a mission in utilization of such resources. Stop following accounts that feel bad to you. Silence some of the keywords. Utilize the screen time monitoring tools.

You may also diversify your sources. Read across the board. Search to find material opposing yours.

Above all, be a voter of improved governance. Exert pressure on the platforms requiring them to be open regarding how their algorithms operate. Speak up about ethical AI.

If we don’t speak up now, we might not even recognize the future we scroll into.

Not all the dangers of AI in social media are clear. Meanwhile, it does not sound with red sirens or large warning signs. Instead, they sneak into your life via a recommended video, an idea of a post being recommended, or a trending hash-tag.

Comfort turns into a drug. However, it costs something.

AI can make our digital life enjoyable, and yet, it can enslave our will, pervert our sense of reality, and annihilate our mental health, in case we let it.

So the next time you find yourself mindlessly scrolling, consider this: Who’s really in control?
